Kas Kranenburg

Junior Modeller

What inspired you to pursue your current career?

My passion for energy modelling began during my academic studies, particularly when I was building and analyzing energy system models. I was instantly drawn to Quintel because of its commitment to the open-source model. The opportunity to directly contribute to the energy transition through my work aligns perfectly with me.

What's your favorite part about working at Quintel?

In the Modelling & Development team we aim to enhance the ETM. With each project we investigate new developments & innovations in the energy system and implement these in the model. Through this we are able to learn new concepts & ideas in the energy system with each project.

If you could switch roles with anyone else at Quintel for a day, who would it be and why?

I think my choice would be to switch roles with Mart. From what I understand, Mart uses the ETM to advise parties in their journey in the energy transition in his day-to-day work. In the role I have at the moment (modeller) you are focused on the shortcomings of the model and how to remove these on a daily basis. In Mart's role you would focus more on the strong points of the model and how this can help others. While it would be interesting to switch roles with Mart for a day to see how the ETM is used in strategic energy transition advice, I would be eager to return to my regular duties as a modeller by the end of the day.

What is one thing about your job that surprises people when you tell them?

The fact that our model is open-source and open-access for everyone. Most people think this is quite special and raise the question how our business model works. The fact that we exist for 15 years is proof that this business model can work quite well.
